We have heard of issues about pumping stations failing. Anglia Water provide the following guidance.
Wet wipes are causing sewer flooding in Clophill
Homes in Clophill are at risk of sewer blockages and flooding caused by wipes being flushed down loos. Many residents are unaware that one of the biggest causes of sewer blockages in homes is from wipes and sanitary waste that should be disposed of in the bin, never flushed.
We all rely on sewer pumps to take used water safely away from our homes.
In recent months, sewers and pumps in Clophill Works have been blocked by wet wipes. Unfortunately, these unflushableitems do not break down like toilet paper in the sewer network.
Taking used water and sewage safely away from homes and businesses relies on the network of pipes and pumps all working effectively. If they become blocked by items that should never be flushed, it can lead to sewer flooding of homes and environmental pollution, which is distressing, costly to put right, and potentially devastating for wildlife and our local waterways and seas.
What you can do.
You can help prevent sewer blockages and flooding by only flushing the three P’s - pee, (toilet) paper and poo.
What we are doing
We are committed to a yearly planned maintenance of our pipework and clearing blockages when they happen, but we all need to work together to avoid sewer blockages. Through our programme Keep It Clear, we are working with communities, such as Clophill, to raise awareness of the issues caused by flushing wipes and sanitary waste.
Thank you to everyone who is already helping by only flushing the three P’s.
